New road through Canalside officially opened!
The road providing access to the newly built Deanery CofE Academy secondary school has officially opened. Linda Culling, the Deanery Principal, and Councillor Gary Sumner did the honours, cutting the ribbon and opening the road to traffic.
The £3m project has been funded by the Council and includes around 500m of new road. The works were designed by Peter Brett Associates and has been constructed by Fox (Owmby) Limited. Taking a year and a half to complete the team have worked through all weathers to construct all the drains, utilities, lights, signs and carriageway.
There are still a few finishing off works to do along the footways but the vast majority is complete allowing the Deanery’s first visitors to drive to their car park. Having taken receipt of the keys on 1st July the school is becoming more active each day with future pupils attending their transition days and a concert and 24 hour football match planned this weekend.
The road will eventually also provide access to the District Centre car park and is an important piece in the jigsaw that connects the Wichelstowe development.
Rob Powe, Wichelstowe Programme Manager, said ‘As the busiest pedestrian street in the development, particular attention has been given to the use of materials and trees to create an attractive environment. The street will unlock further development in Canalside and I’m looking forward it becoming the bustling heart of Wichelstowe’
