What's Happening Now
The first home in East Wichel was occupied in April 2009. Over 500 homes, including 'affordable' and open market properties, have since been occupied.
East Wichel Community Primary School has been completed and opened and a Martson's pub/restaurant has also opened.
A new Community Centre is currently under construction and is expected to be completed during summer 2013.
The neighbourhood benefits from a series of amenity lakes and rural paths and also boasts one of the longest sections of canal built anywhere in the country in recent years. It runs alongside the development for some 1,100 metres.
A 3.5 hectare District Centre is planned in Middle Wichel and, in due course, will offer a range of shops. Waitrose has planning permission to build a supermarket at the Centre. It is hoped that the supermarket will open on 2014 with other facilities in the district centre to follow, along with new housing.
Works are due to start on the earthworks contract which will prepare the development platform for the Waitrose site and adjoining platforms in July (2013).
Works are also due to start on Mill Lane in mid-July. This will involve closure of the road for a period of approximately six months.
The timing of construction of homes in Middle and West Wichel is yet to be clarified and will depend on a number of factors including market conditions and which developers express interest in building at the location.
